    Political Seating Chart

    Hi all

I've had a look through - but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

Essentially, I'm trying to create a chart that looks like this:

    \1

What I want is to show the individual seats (or units), but have them coloured according to their relative proportions.

I've used the donut chart to create a sort of stand in - but what I really want is the clearly defined seats.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks

You could use a xy-scatter to generate the seating plan. You will need to calculate the position of each seat though.

Do you have any actual data?
    Cheers

Yes - the idea is to link the chart to an existing election 'calculator'.

I'm trying to provide a comparison of different electoral systems, using the same electoral data.

How would I go about plotting the XY chart?

    I've attached the spreadsheet.

Your data was not really much use for charting so I just made some up in order to illustrate an approach.

Crikey! Looks complicated, but it's a good jumping off point!

Thank you for your help - I'll have a play around and see if I can get it to cooperate

    Re: Political Seating Chart

I've had a play - and I can use it for one-shot data - but what I really need is something that dynamically assigns the 'seats' on the chart - can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Re: Political Seating Chart

I have enhanced the workbook to dynamically allocate seats.

Just enter figures in the green cells.

    Example will handle 168 seats.

    Outstanding - thank you!

What do I do if I want to alter the number of seats?

(Sorry, not trying to be difficult - just trying to learn!)

I'm aiming for a range of 40 seats and 10 colours.

    Re: Political Seating Chart

If you clear rows 49 onwards you will have 42 seats.

The number of rows/columns in the chart can be changed by altering the values in column A and B.

To add more colours you need to add in columns to the right of L.
You will also need to update the lookup table currently in A1:H3.

And you will need to add new series to chart and format data markers

    Ah... sounds complicated :S

Thanks for your help - I think I might be a bit out of my depth :D

I'll play around and see if I can get anywhere.

    Thanks again for your help.

    ----EDIT----

    I'm stuck - I can't get it to work

Hi Andy - thanks for your help with this.

I think I've got to grips with it now, pretty much.

Could I ask you for another piece of help, though, please.

What would I need to do to change the layout to create a circle, rather than a semi-circle?

    Cheers!

Don't quote whole posts -- it's just clutter.

If you are responding to a post out of sequence, limit quoted content to a few relevant lines that makes clear to whom and what you are responding.

    Sorry!

Force of habit, but I'll try to avoid it in the future.

    Re: Political Seating Chart

It's a beautiful piece of work - and it's worked perfectly for what I've been doing, too.

I'm trying to expand the model at the moment to include the potential for overhang seats, which is why I need to try a circular arrangement.

    Love this forum!

    Re: Political Seating Chart

First you need to alter the fixed values of the Y axis.

Right click and pick Chart Options.
Axes tab and enable both axis.
Set Y axis to have Min=-10

To make the plot circlular alter the formula in C7

    =360/(COUNTIF($B$7:$B$174,B7)-1)

And thanks for the comments guys
