XY scatter plot: Third variable determines color of plots/line

    Hello all,
Similar to the thinking of three-dimensional graph types (I have XL 2003), is there a way for a third variable to determine the color of the plot? Furthermore, can the color of the line segment connecting plots be determined by the color of the plots it connects? For example, if to consecutive plots are yellow, the line connecting them is yellow. If one plot is green, and the next is blue, the line connecting them fades from green to blue. Attached is a simplified version, with the key for the "Z-variable" showing color designations.... My example is attached

You can change the marker colours using either multiple series or VBA.
You can change the line segment colour but not with a gradiation only solid colour.

    Andy,

Do you have VBA code to color XY chart by third property?
    I'm searching the archives here.

Thanks Andy. Sorry for not responding sooner; I have limited internet access right now. I was afraid that what you say above was correct, so I decided to take this project in a different direction. If interested, see the post titled "Cell values translated to color gradients: macro needed". My plan is to perhaps use the stacked bar chart I address in the post above as background for an x-y scatter plot chart or maybe even a 100% stacked area chart so that the line appears as the colors. Use of gradient coloring is especially important in this project.
