    Graph a BUNCH of Categories

    Greetings, Gurus,

I have been trying, unsuccesfully, to create a decent looking graph that shows the in stock percent of several locations. No matter what I try, it just looks like a jumbled mess. I am trying to create a line graph, with dates on the horizontal axis, and percentages on the vertical, with a legend to show what location each line represents. As I said, this just looks like a jumble, so I thought I'd hit the experts for ideas.

The data I am trying to chart is in the attached workbook. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

The forum rules about bumping said that if, after a day, you had no response, and you feel your post is descriptive enough, you can reply with "Bump No Response" to move the post to the top of the forum. I would say I was pretty darn close.

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum. I knew there used be a forum for Excel Charting on the main page, when I didn't see it I guessed the proper forum would be Excel General. I wasn't aware that Charting had been moved to a sub-topic of Excel Programming.

Anyway, thanks for moving it for me. Now, anything you can do to help?

    How about an interactive chart?
Where you pick the hub that's of interest.

That looks great!! Never seen one like that. I'll have to study it to see how you did it.

    Thanks Andy!

    One other issue, Andy.

I couldn't figure out how you got the data to plot. When I inserted the new data from today into the data set, as well as inserting a blank cell on your filtered row and copying in the formula, the new data didn't show on the graph.

I clicked the graph, and went to "Select Data", and couldn't figure out how to change the data range without screwing up the layout.

Can you help me to make this a dynamic chart for when I insert new data?

    Latest sample is attached.

Thanks for all your time and efforts!

Nevermind, Andy. I got it. I just needed to select the horizontal axis and THEN select data rather than selecting the chart.

    Have a good one!

I hope you're still subscribed to this thread, Andy.

Here's my problem: My categories have changed, and in the process of trying to update my chart, I have screwed up some formula. I get a formula error whenever I select a new location. I can't find the problem.

The workbook is attached if anybody wants to take a look.

Also, how do you make all of the data show on the graph, but only the selected data is bold and colored?

    Thanks in advance.

I can not see any error in the formula. Where exactly is the error?

The chart has data series for all the locations in your data table. These lines are formatted as grey.

The Average line is formatted orange so it stands out.

The final series is the dynamic one which uses MATCH and INDEX formula to extract the specified locations data from the main table.

A21 contains a data validtion list based on the Locations in the data table.

Thanks for explaining the chart, Andy.

As far as where the error is, I don' know. I just get an error every time I select a different location. The formula looked good, and I tried using the error checker, it didn't find anything. Still, I keep getting the annoying message.

Hmmmm. That file works for me now as well. The last thing I did before I uploaded it was remove the module containing macros, because the file size was still a little too big. I didn't think to check it again after removing the module. Oddly enough, I went back to the file that WAS having the problem, (I SWEAR), and it seems to be working with no problems now, too. Perhaps I just needed to save the file after changing the ranges. Sorry to cry wolf !

Since I've got you on the line, however, is there anyway to have this chart, (last example I posted), automatically update when I insert new data? As it stands now I manually adjust the range on each individual location after I insert new data.

    You're a lifesaver, Andy.

If the data is expanding in terms of extra periods then you can use Named Ranges. You will need to create 1 for each series.

Or you could use code to change the series formula.

Sounds like Named Ranges may be the way to go. I'll do some study on "Using dynamic ranges in an Excel chart".

Thanks for all your help, Andy. I'll mark this thread "Solved" again.

    Have a good one!
