How to connect vertical lines to specific dates (x-axis)

I have a chart with dates as the x axis. I'd like to draw vertical lines the refer to specific dates on the chart. I tried using the drawing tool but the lines are not linked so if I resize the chart, or move it, the drawing are not moved. I tried using "Grouping" but that did not work.;

Suggestions?

By extension, I would also like to color the background based on specific x-axis items such as month, etc.

Are the metric(s) you are charting presented as a line series over time or bars?

There is an easy solution to add vertical lines (bars) to a Line chart.

It'd be easier to show than tell, do you have an example file?

You can use additional data series to both shade and draw vertical lines.

This example shades Sat/Sundays and draws a vertial line for Mondays.
