How to keep empty cells off the x-axis

Hello, I am tyring to figure out how to chart a series of data that has blank cells on the x-axis. The data is set up like this:

    Location
    1
    2
    3

When I select the category (x) axis labels, under source data, I include several empty cells under the 'locations' listed above so that the chart does not have to be reconfigured for multiple users that have more or less locations than those currently listed. When I do this, excel leaves a bunch of empty spots on the x-axis that I do not want displayed. Is there a way to stop these blank cells from being displayed? This will allow the data to be less compressed for fewer locations. I appologize for my lack of knowledge here, so please let me know if I can explain this better as I don't know all the lingo. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Well after some more searching I found the post 'how not to plot' and my problem is that the data will always be entered with the empty cells at the bottom and I want to make the chart only display the cells that have data. Is that possible? Thanks again for any help!
