Offset charting trouble.

When charting using Named ranges that return a reference using the Offset function, charts return [0] after saving and reopening the file, thus breaking the functionality.
This only occurs in .xlsx formated files. As a work around I've been saving
as .xls, but this limits some functionality I would like to have, not to mention the compatibility nags to other users.
Any ideas as to what causes this problem and/or ways to fix it?
