Unable to group columns in pivot table

Hi, guys. I am relatively new to Pivot Table.

I am trying to group TL 1&3 to be under OM1 and TL 2&4 under OM2, but the grouping button is not active (grayed out). I can only do grouping the rows (the months into quarters).

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I don't think you can do that with Pivot Tables they way you are trying.

You will have to add a Helper Column to you data, and similar to the Column TL, you will need a corresponding column where you will mention (Using formula or otherwise) the OM.

Then you will have to use that column instead of TL

Thank you! It actually solved my problem. But, may I know why I can't group those columns? I tried josephteh's reply (pulling the TLs to rows), but it didn't work either.

Pull TL to Rows section of Field List
> multi-select "TL 1" and "TL 3" > right-mouse-click > Group > change group name to "OM 1"
Do similarly for "TL 2" and "TL 4"
TL2 field would be created
Move TL2 to Columns section and remove TL from Rows section

I just figured out that clicking "add data to data model" made my grouping button grayed out. Pulling TL to rows works. Thank you, josepteh.
