    X-axis labelling

    Good morning,

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I could not see a thread relating to it.

I have a data series containing 366 values (call volumes for 2020) and I cannot figure out how to edit the x-axis labels so that they only show the months of the year instead of every day of the year.

The X-axis looks a bit crowded and is difficult to read, so just having the months listed would be the preferred option.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Re: X-axis labelling

Chart type? Is the x-axis a date axis or a text axis? Usually the easiest way to label every month on an x axis is to use a chart type that supports a date axis (pretty much any chart type other than scatter or bubble), then format the axis to be a date axis and use months as its main unit and show every month.

    Hi MrShorty,

Thank you for your response and assistance.

The graph generated is a line graph, so your fix should work.

I'll give it a go shortly and will let you know if I encounter any further issues.

Your help is very much appreciated.

    Kindest regards,
    Peter

    Re: X-axis labelling

Excel is usually good at auto detecting dates for a date axis. If Excel is having any trouble detecting or accepting the date axis, double check the dates in the spreadsheet and make sure they are stored as numbers and not text (ISTEXT() is or ISNUMBER() are good tools for checking). If you find that you have numbers stored as text in your sheet, look into what you need to do to make these numbers and not text.

    Re: X-axis labelling

    Thanks again,

The issue is that I have each day of 2019 & 2020 with associated data. They are currently in the dd/mm/yyyy format.

I need to change these to read the Irish language version. This is not a problem, but when I amend the date range from dd/mm/yyyy to dd/mmmm/yyyy in Irish,
I don't seem to have the same Format Axis options that I did before I edited the dates.

I have attached a copy of the spreadsheet for reference.

There are 2 graphs, I need to insert the 2nd one into a report, but want the x-axis on that to look the same as the x-axis on the 1st graph (just in Irish, not English)

I was sent these graphs by an outside organisation, so am not familiar with the formatting, etc. that they might have used.

It's a new role for me where I work, so want to make a good impression........as you do

Again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Re: X-axis labelling

Making no edits to the sample file:

    1) I close my copy of Excel (might need to close all office programs).
    2) I pull up the region and language settings in Windows control panel (I assume you are using Windows for your OS, but I think you can find similar settings in other OS).
    3) Change my regional settings to Irish.
    4) Open your file in Excel (again, no edits), and the months on the X axis all appear in what I assume is Irish.

Number formatting chooses the month text based on your OS's regional settings, so I am guessing that you just need to choose an appropriate regional setting in your operating system. Or maybe you don't need to change anything, because anyone who opens this file in Excel should see the months in the language dictated by their OS settings.

Does that solve the problem or does it create a new problem where you will need to be frequently switching OS regional settings?
