Calculating Amplitude and cycle number of point along graph

    Hello,

I am plotting a graph of displacement against time of a vibrating mass. To calculate the logarithmic decrement of the system i am required to measure the amplitude of the first peak in the sine wave, followed by a different peak after many cycles. Is there a way in which you can measure the amplitude of a peak after many cycles on the graph as well as the number of cycles the system has undergone up to this point?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

I have found that for less than 1/2 cycle, a third degree polynomial very closely approximates a sine curve. So select a data range that comes close to 1/4 wavelength around what looks like a peak and calculate the curve then take the derivative and solve for zero. That's how you can find peaks and their amplitude.

Without a workbook, I can't offer much more.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Sometimes a thought has to sit in my brain for a while before it makes sense.

Is this the function you want to solve? A*e^Bt*SIN(Ct + D) + E?

If so, provide some sample data and I can show you how to compute the least squares fit to your data.

I don't know if thats the function i am trying to solve sorry. I need to find a peak after many cycles and i was wondering if this can easily been done using the chart as this would take a lot of time to scroll through the data. I have attached a sample of the data I am using. Thanks for your help

Re: Calculating Amplitude and cycle number of point along graph

I remembered that I had seen this problem before. Almost any periodic function can be described by the general formula I posted above.

The method I use is to take a good guess at what the parameters should be and use a tool called solver. I use my guesses to calculate the values. Then I take the differences between my calculated values and the actual values and square them. I sum up the squares of the differences and that is the value that must be minimized by tweaking the parameters. There is a tool in Excel called Solver that does this kind of calculation.

I had never used the solver add in before and didn't know how much of a useful tool it is. Thanks for all your help. Ill be able to quickly find the damping for the rest of my tests.
