    Formatting data for stacked chart

    Hi,

    I am attempting to create a 100% stacked column out of the data shown. Ideally, it will have average satisfaction on the y-axis, the year on the x-axis, and whether or not they are a union member shown through colours. However, I am struggling with how to format the data in order to do this. There are over 50,000 rows of data. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

    It is difficult to help from a picture. My first guess would be to use a pivot table and chart to summarize the data and present. If you are unfamiliar with using pivot tables in Excel: http://www.excel-easy.com/data-analy...ot-tables.html

    1) Select the pictured data.
    2) Insert -> pivot table
    3) in the pivot fields pane, put:
    3a) year as the row labels
    3b) union_member as the column labels
    3c) Average of satisfaction as the value field
    4) Select pivot table and insert 100% stacked column chart.

    Worked! Thanks a lot mate.
    Only issue is on the graph the Union membership is labelled as 1 or 0 instead of yes or no and the labour satisfaction is not an average. Any ideas of how to change the labels and change the quantities?

    Edit: The number of union and non union members is different so I would have to divide the quantities separately.

    This is because the values in the source data table are 1s and 0s. If you can replace the 1s and 0s with yes and no in the source table, the pivot table should change the column label text accordingly. Find and Replace commands might be the easiest way to make that change in that column. I am, of course, assuming you are allowed to edit this column in the source data.

    and the labour satisfaction is not an average.
    If you look at your "Field settings" dialog (see the section titled "change summary calculation" in the Excel-Easy link above), you can see all of the built in summary calculations Excel's basic pivot table can perform. If your desired summary calculation is not listed, then you may need something different. Unfortunately, I am not very experienced with anything more than the most basic of pivot table features. There may be ways to use other summary calculations (perhaps using Power Pivot), but I am not familiar with those features. I will request those more experienced with pivots to chime in here.
