Axis values won't update with new data

Hi there,

I've created a chart in Excel, with monthly values along the horizontal axis. It's a slightly complicated chart, with several data sources represented in different types on different axes.

My problem is this: I want to add another couple of months to my chart. I r-clicked on the chart, selected 'Data Sources' and went through each of my data series on the left side of this window to extend the range by a couple of cells. This worked fine and showed up on the graph. I then used the section on the right to expand my selection of labels and, although the updated data is reflected in this window, it's not reflected on the chart.

The chart previously went up to 'Aug', and as you can see from the screenshots, I have now added 'Sep' and 'Oct' to this. The chart extends, the data displays correctly, the Data Source window shows the correct range that I wish to use for my axis label, but then it's blank on the chart itself! It's driving me nuts!

If I edit one of the month names at the source, it is reflected in the chart. I just don't know why the two new values are not displaying on the chart, especially since they are displaying in the 'Data Sources' window.

Any help (even a bodge or workaround) appreciated.

You'd be better advised to upload the workbook rather than a picture so that we can see the problem in context.
Have you set the x axis to automatic scaling?

I can't see where I would set automatic scaling, but just to clarify, the scale is correct, it's just the labels that are not showing.

If you select the yellow columns series you'll see it's currently set to

Magic, thank you. I've never used the formula bar when working with charts before! I figured I could do it all through that window.

As a follow-up (if that's allowed), previously when creating a chart, if I select two columns for the series names (in this example, the quarter and the month, rather than just the month) then it arranges it nicely, with the quarter centered under the 3 months. If I try and add that now, it just puts the quarter name under the first month of each quarter.

Eg, it does this...

Hi,

In the Label section of the Axis Options, there is an option for multi-level category labels which you need to enable.
