DAX has a lot of functions that are not available in Excel. Also, DAX formulas can be used not only for calculated columns, but for measures that aggregate data. Take a look at Rob Collie's book "Dax Formulas for Power Pivot". It's a fantastic resource for DAX and a Power Pivot tutorial all in one.
