    Display Y axis as letters instead of numbers?

    Ive been struggling trying to get this sorted out for weeks now with no luck. Bellow is a graph which i am using in my uni course work and I need to have the Y axis labeled with letters instead of numbers.

    example1.jpg

    I came across a tutorial which explained how to combine 2 different graphs and while this does add the letters I need, it not really what im after.

    After some reading I thought I could format the axis with a custom format code. i thought something like this would work.
    [=0] "N";[=10] "R";[=20] "O";[=30] "F";[=40] "C";[=50] "A";[=60] "S";[=70] "E";[=-10] "R";[=-20] "O";[=-30] "F";[=-40] "C";[=-50] "A";[=-60] "S";[=-70] "E"
    it works for the first 2 ( N and R) but it wont let me add anymore after that. I really need to get this sorted as im running out of time now. Im not the greatest with excel, but i cannot believe its so difficult to do something that should be quite straight forward.

    I'll attach a work book in the hopes that someone can help me solve this.example 1.xlsx

    Re: Display Y axis as letters instead of numbers?

    Looks like a continuation of this thread: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...-pictured.html

    Knowing that you have seen Jon Peltier's "category Y-axis" tutorial: http://peltiertech.com/Excel/Charts/Y_CategoryAxis.html is there a specific part of his instructions that you are having trouble implementing? It looks like you are at the point of adding the data labels to the "dummy" axis in the 2nd "test" chart. This should be very straightforward if you have downloaded Rob bovey's "XY chart labeler" add-in mentioned in the tutorial (appspro.com ). Your profile suggests you are using Excel 2007 (I guess that is what MS Office version 7 means), so you will want the add-in. If you are perchance using Excel 2013 or later, I believe MS added this feature to Excel 2013 and later, so you would not need the add-in. Assuming you're using a pre-2013 version, it should be as easy as:

    1) Download and install the add-in
    2) With the chart selected, click on the "Add labels" button on the chart labels ribbon group
    3) follow the dialog instructions to add column M as labels for the "dummy" series.

    the hardest part of this is step 1, because some are not allowed to download and install the add-in on their computers. If you absolutely cannot download the add-in or upgrade to Excel 2013+, then this becomes much more difficult.

    Re: Display Y axis as letters instead of numbers?

    Thank you, its almost perfect now, except I have one remaining problem.

    Because I am only using the dummy series, and have set the y axis labels as "none" it overlaps the y axis title, as seen in the picture. I know I can move the y axis title but I need it to the left of the y axis. the problem is there isnt any room now even if i re-size the chart.example 2.jpg

    EDIT:

    never mind. Ive fixed it. its perfect now. honestly thanks so much.
