how do i get the most popular bands using a pivot table

Hi

I am asked to get the most popular bands in 1986 and 1996 and how many songs they had in the top 3000 using a pivot table but i can't seem to get it. The work is in the sheet i label as consistent performers in the attachment. Also i organized the pivot table the way the question asked me to.

but as a hint - you are trying to create a pivot table
to show the artist and then to count the songs they have had
then you need to sort the pivot table from highest to lowest
which you have done - all but the sort part to get the number of songs in descending order
have another go and post back here - you are very close - look at the sort options


think how a pivot table works
the row labels will group the columns together for the same name
and the Values will Sum a column or count a column or other value changes - by right clicking on the element - Value field settings - you can change so that column of data is counted or summed or average
and it will be grouped by the elements that are in the row labels

Yeah I followed the steps but, when I got to check yr 1996 no values showed, that's why I'm confused because the question said to get the most popular band at that yr but if no values showed how would I get it?

so if you put the year as a page filter , then artist, then count the songs - and sort by artist based on song volume in the year
you should be able to use the page filter to just show 1996
and can check the results using a filter on the raw data tab

I did that and it doesn't give me any values just blanks

Hi,
I think there might be something wrong with the layout of the question, because each time i input the data on the pivot table it comes out like this Screen Shot 2014-11-18 at 3.34.19 AM.jpg for the year 1986 and Screen Shot 2014-11-18 at 3.34.19 AM.jpg for the year 1996. I met my TA for assistance but he didn't know know what the problem was. Pls help.
