How to have a graph/chart represent whether or not a cell h as been filled

    Hi everyone,

I am making a spreadsheet that will be used to track employee time usage. I would like to be able to create a graph of the time throughout the day that shows only whether or not the employee has entered an activity during each particular time slot.

EX: The graph shows the time from 8-10am in 30 minute increments. The employee has entered activities for the time slots from 8-9 and 9:30-10. When the graph is created, I would like to see times 8-9 and 9:30-10 filled (or, charted, or, however I should phrase it) and time 9-9:30 left blank (to represent that no work was done).

I have attached the sheet that I am currently working with. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just pointing me in the direction of some tutorials!

Yes! That is exactly what I was looking for.

Do you mind explaining how you accomplished that so that in the future I can do something similar on my own?

Edit: Although, while this creates the exact type of graph that I was looking for, would there be a way to accomplish the same thing without use of the "E" column?

I ask because it would be much easier for workers to input information correctly if they didn't have to remember to put 1's next to every filled time slot and 0's next to every empty time slot.

Edit edit: On my way to a solution using the "ISTEXT(cell)" command...

    Final edit:

Figured it out, thanks for your help etaf.

I paired "ISTEXT(cell)" to the activity column and used the resulting data to create a chart with the time slots from column A. Now, all I have to do is find a way to change the axis so that the intervals 0, .2, .4, . . . , 1.2 are shortened to only 0, 1. But, I'm sure this is something I can figure out on my own.

    Thanks again!

sorry, i thought i replied on how it was done, anyway you seem to have worked it out

to reduce to 1 hour axis - then you could just setup a graph helper column
but if 1/2 hour had no activity how would you want to display in the hours, as it can only be on/off
