    Access backend DB data lost?

    Good Morning,

A year ago I developed a simple DB for my employer to keep track of folks requesting an appointment for our clinics via our website. I split the DB and put it on a network drive so cust-service folks could open it from their clinics physical location and be able to see any updates that were done by someone else since the backend DB was on the network. It has worked beautifully until this past week, now when opening the _be.accdb it is empty and should have 50-100 records in it. The file size shows as 696KB so I think there is data in it....I've tried exporting from it but the export file is empty after all attempts. I've also tried the repair button with no change, not sure where to go from here, do I have other options? My experience is limited to self taught to develop this application to satisfy the business need....I'm not an access developer but can learn.

Does your system do regular backups? Do you have IT support? I would try to restore from a recent backup. 696KB is not zero but it's not much. It's possible your data was lost somehow.

This is a shot in the dark.

Make a copy of your accdb file. This is essential!
In Access, go to the "Database Tools" tab
    Select "Compact and Repair Database"
Browse to the copy you just made and click "Compact". If there is a fixable corruption this might fix it.

This may not be your problem. But it's quick to try. I would not expect a corrupted file to open at all.

I did attempt that early on but went ahead and gave it another shot just now for the heck of it...unfortunately it did not work. I've also tried exporting in all the optional file types with no data in the output file other than headerss.

If nothing else, I've learned the IT guy does not have network backups so that's something to keep in mind....guess I'll start doing manual backups myself.....

Have you tried Windows' Previous Versions feature under properties?

Key point from your IT is "before you noticed the corruption". You need a rolling backup so that you can go back far enough for any corruption not to be the backup. How far this is depends on the application's usage and likely timeframe any issues would be noticed and how useful the data from that far back would be.

A good start could be a monthly one covering the last 12 months and then one for each of the last 7 days, if they can implement that.
