How do you edit macros outside of Excel?

I have a spreadsheet from someone else that contains a macro that runs when
the workbook opens. I want to edit that macro, but since the macro also
saves the workbook with a new name, I cannot get to the macro (without
triggering it). Is there any way to edit the macro outside of Excel?

    Hi Jim,

You can disable code that runs when workbook opens by depressing the Shift
key when you open the workbook.

Set your security to medium and when the dialog ask whether you wnat to
enable macros just say no. Now you can edit the code...

set a higher security level on macros in extras/macro/security. when
opening the file, disable macros. then they will not run and you can
    edit them.

Open the workbook and disable the macros; that way it will not run on
opening and you can edit it.

I tried that. The workbook opens with a message saying "you must enable
macros," and when I go to view macros, there aren't any listed. But I can
view the Excel file in a text editor and see some of the commands--for
example, the one that saves the spreadsheet with a new name. Very puzzling.

    Hi Jim,

With the workbook open, right-click the Excel icon on the worksheet
(or the icon to the left of the File menu if your workbook is maximised)

Select 'View Code' from the menu to access the Workbook_Open procedure.
