    Chart Legend Problem

    GREETINGS:

For many years I was able to enter Titles for the Legend on charts I created...and they would reappear forever - even after updating and entering new data.

In the later versions I've been using.... when I re-open the file, the Legend Titles are there....however - when I add new data to extend the Timeline of the Chart... those Titles disappear and return to default Series 1, Series 2 etc.

How do I overcome this and retain the Titles?

    Thanks -

    MARK

Hi MHM49 and welcome to the forum,

Microsoft has "Improved" the code in each newer version of Excel. If you are using the latest version for the Mac you will find improvements, one of which is the charting tool/code. Read here to see what is newer http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...#_Toc274394097

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

First - Thanks, Marvin, for the quick response.

However - as I read thru the link - I did not find an answer to my problem. I can't believe that I'm the only EXCEL user who has incurred this problem. The titles just go back to default. If you would suggest please, where on the ribbon, or drop down menu, I can LOCK the LEGEND titles - I would be most appreciative.

    Thank You -

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

You are correct, that I didn't supply an answer to your problem. I simply stated that Excel has changed code for a lot of things in newer versions. We have questions frequently about old versions vs newer versions. This would validate your problem, that it should/might change.

Your best bet is to read Andy Pope's website and see if he has an answer. See http://www.andypope.info/tips/tip001.htm or
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...010007434.aspx or perhaps
    http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/excel2...l2007s3p6.html

I'd turn on the macro recorder and change the legends or titles to what you want and see what was recorded in my macro to see how it is handled in the newer version of XL.

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

    GREETINGS AGAIN!

Here are the Visuals to explain my problem.

#1 - Before I edit Titles on Legend
#2 - After I edit Titles on Legend
    #3 - After I update Chart Data

Note that the Titles have reverted to Default.

I would like them to remain as edited.... which was the way former Excel Charts worked.

    I welcome a solution!

    Thank You

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

Here is the workbook that generates the charts.
I update the data daily and then go to SOURCE DATA on the chart and change the range to reflect the revised time frame.

When I do this - the Legend Labels revert to Series 1, etc.

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

The chart does not include the header row in the source data range. Whether the range range is change manually or by code you need to retain the header row reference otherwise it will default to labeling Series 1, Series 2 etc.

Current range referenece for 2012 GRAPH
    ='DAILY WEIGHTS'!$A$1425:$F$1582

    Should actually be
    ='DAILY WEIGHTS'!$A$2:$F$2,'DAILY WEIGHTS'!$A$1425:$F$1582

    ANDY:

My early attempt to use your formula seems positive..... I'll have to play with it more later when I have more time.... however, question.... the above suggestion refers to which of my Charts.... I think 2012?

Is the idea that your first part of the formula simply lists the ROW HEADINGS, followed by the specific desired range?

Thanks so much.... I feel like I'm going to get there!

    Re: Chart Legend Problem

Yes, as stated, Current range referenece for 2012 GRAPH

Yes you need to include the row with the series names in. When this is not part of a contiguous range the areas will be separated by a comma.

    ANDY:

Thank you so much..... I finally had the time to re-enter all of the DATA SOURCES and it works perfectly!

I've been trying to tackle this for a very long time. I appreciate the help.

Wishing you all the best -
