How can I manually open a workbook without the running macros that are set to
run when the workbook is opened?

You can change the security level to high (or medium and say no to the allow
macro prompt) to turn off all macros in that workbook (open the workbook after
you toggle this setting--it's not retroactive).
Or you could hold the shift key down while opening the file. This stops the
auto_open and workbook_open events, but doesn't disable all the macros (if you
need them later).

Holding the shift key down while opening the file is exactly the type of
solution I was looking for.
Thank you very much,
