Dec 9/10 Update broke Excel's ActiveX Controls?

If anyone is familiar with this, I would love to get more information.
My company has a large collection of Excel sheets that contain ActiveX controls and VBA language to reference them.

After an automatic windows update on Dec 10 @ 3AM, the Excel sheets began throwing errors, mainly related to the ActiveX controls with an error message of "Method or Data Member not found."
Additionally, none of the ActiveX Controls were responsive, they could not be clicked. One in 'Developer mode' the controls could be clicked, but attempting to view the properties of the ActiveX control merely showed the properties for the current active sheet in the properties dialog window.
I have checked the options in Trust center, and found no resolution changing any settings.

Any tips, help, anything is greatly appreciated.
(Current fix has been to use system restore and roll-back to yesterday.)

    Thank you for your time.

Thanks for the reply, I did not see your post further down. (To be fair, I used google to search for the keywords.)

The following updates are responsible, as after the roll-back, I have installed all updates BUT the following.
    Everything is still behaving properly.
    ~Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB2910902)
    ~Security Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2553154)
    ~Security Update for Microsoft Word 2010 (KB2899519)

This solution seems to work. It is from microsofts site.
Search for and delete all .exd files

Confirmed to be a Security Update for Microsoft Office products
Information of update here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2910902
Update is intended to patch a security hole in Excel that allows remote code execution.
    Additional information here : https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-083

In any case, I am unsure how to get excel's ActiveX buttons to work AND have the update at the same time.
Please note that I have done a system restore to an earlier date, and installed ALL pending updates except:
    KB2910902 - Excel Security Update
    KB2553154 - Office Security Update
    KB2899519 - Word Security Update
It has not been confirmed if a system restore is required, or if you may simply uninstall the listed updates.
I have reached an acceptable solution, and as such, have stopped messing with it. I will hope that MS can provide additional information on how these updates function so that users can repair the spreadsheets.

Please note these are tagged as 2010 updates, but the linked article shows that 2007, 2010, and 2013 products are affected.
Updates may have different affects on other products. I am only able to confirm for 2010.

Another topic with the same issues on Excel 2007 found a solution.
I have confirmed the solution for Excel 2010 users as well.

Thanks, this worked on my laptop with Excel 2003, 2007 on windows 7.
What a disaster, caused me a whole load of embarrassment last night as a demo would not work.
I cant believe Microsoft allowed this update to cause such issues.

Re: Dec 9/10 Update broke Excel's ActiveX Controls?

This is not a simple problem.
Here are some additional notes regarding the update.

Once you update your computer... it changes something within ANY excel file you save.
What this means is that if an updated computer opens one of the affected Excel Documents and SAVES it, a computer that has NOT been updated may throw additional errors and stop working.
This means that only updating a handful of machines is not an option if they need to work with the same files.
Please note that any documents made prior to the update will still function, until an updated machine opens and saves the document...
I did some searching around for the related error messages, and was only able to find posts regarding 'corrupt' ActiveX controls... the recommended solution was to rebuild the workbook from scratch, copy and pasting code over.
Luckily, you can update your machine to resolve this... but only as long as you remove the EXD files that are left behind after the update. There should be at LEAST 4 of them. M
